Karuizawa is situated at the foot of an active volcano and is home to over 1,000 species of plants, including many rare varieties, making it one of Japan’s most unique locations. The plan designated a hotel restaurant that could be used as an international meeting space, and also be suitable for important figures. The entrance wall has lacquered wooden blocks made from local larch and antique bricks that were used in China. The center of the restaurant has a show kitchen counter, and the use of natural aji-ishi stone from Japan expresses the strength of the land. In front of the show kitchen are unique round sofas, and latticework hangs under the lighted ceiling. The long horizontal space is divided by custom cast-aluminum lattices. The lattice pattern is a Chinese motif of geometric flowers. The main wall of each section is decorated by embroidered flowers, and embroidered folding screens give each of the private dining rooms special atmosphere. The embroidery was done in a traditional Chinese style, and the original images are Japanese Rinpa school pieces from the Edo period (1603-1868). The contrast of the delicate embroidered art against solidity of the natural stone, metal, and black walnut complements both and clearly expresses the wonder of the Karuizawa area. We gave this restaurant a fresh style that blends Japanese style with Chinese technique.
